I International Conference ‘ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN INDUSTRY AND AGRIBUSINESS’ took place in Kiev in September, 2014. The event was organized by Association for Energy Efficiency and Saving and “ETR-spectr”.

Over 180 participants attended the conference, presenting 40 papers on the topics of energy efficiency and energy saving. Actual data of energy efficiency and conservation in the world, EU, the CIS and Ukraine were provided, announcing major challenges and obstacles to the implementation of energy efficiency projects, as well as their solutions.

Legislative initiatives, behavioral changes of consumers, the latest technologies and projects in the field of energy efficiency and energy saving have been the subject of discussion at the event. However, all the participants came to the conclusion – without significant introduction of energy efficient technologies, Ukrainian industry and the municipal sector cannot compete with the Europeans.

Olexander Golizdra noted that metallurgy, coal industry and food industry require major funds for energy efficiency. In general, he said that in the coming years Ukraine needs $25–100 billion, according to various estimates. The representative of the European Energy Community Borko Radevich gave a detailed analysis of implementation of European Directives on energy efficiency in Ukraine. President of the Association for Energy Efficiency and Saving, Oleg Kozachuk presented key results and energy efficiency projects in Ukraine. According to him, current energy intensity of the Ukrainian industry is 3 times higher than the average figure in Europe and every Hryvnia, invested in energy efficiency projects returns three Hryvnias economy.

Senior Manager of the Department of Climate Change and Energy Conservation, EBRD, Sergiy Maslichenko showed possibilities of the Bank to fund projects in the field of energy efficiency and conservation. According to him, within the framework of Ukrainian energy efficiency program, five banks in 2007-2013 were financed for 77 energy efficiency projects across the country. In summer of this year, the Bank has doubled funding for the program implementation of alternative energy projects in Ukraine (USELF) – up to €140 million.

Chief Power Engineer of ‘Zaporizhstal’, Olexander Greek and the Head of the continuous development department of ‘Zaporizhstal’ Eugene Shramko described methods to reduce energy consumption in the production of commercial products. Key issues are the motivation of staff on the reduction of energy consumption and formation of a comprehensive energy management system at all levels of the company hierarchy.

The project of natural gas replacement by solid biofuel at ArcelorMittal Krivyi Rih, presented by Kyiv Bioenergy Company and Gas Research Institute, was particularly interesting for the conference participants.

The prospects of attracting European funding (HORIZON 2020 fund) for the development of technologies in the industry were announced by Olena Vlasyuk, the executive director of Ukrainian technological steel platform.

Representatives of Thyssen Krupp, Anton Walter and William Groth showed advanced technologies in burners.

The conference also presented innovative solutions and technologies for using coal-water fuel; renewable sources and technologies (corn, biogas, biomethane); heat pumps; solid waste; energy-efficient heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, hot water, geothermal sources, and many others.

Companies from Italy, Spain, Germany, China, Korea, Japan, Slovakia, South Africapa participated the conference.
